Poker is a card game played by two or more players. Each player receives a set of cards, known as hole cards, and there are multiple betting intervals during the course of the hand. The object of the game is to win a pot, or the aggregate sum of bets placed during any deal. This may be done by having the highest-ranking poker hand, or by putting chips into the pot that no one else calls. Players may also choose to check, meaning they pass on their turn to act; raise (put additional chips into the pot above an opponent’s bet); or fold.
A basic understanding of poker rules is required to play the game. In addition, the writer needs to know how to interpret different tells and the psychology of the players. A good understanding of how poker is played in a casino setting is also helpful.
In a cash game, the number of players can vary from 6 to 14, but it is best to limit the number of players to 6. Players must bet in a certain order; the first player to act places a bet and any other players must either call or fold their hands. Players may also “check” to pass on their turn to act or raise a bet by an established minimum amount.
